Yesterday, I had a very embarrassing incident in my life. While coming to college last night, suddenly I saw a friend with whom I hadn’t met in a long time. I said, “Come, let’s sit here for a while.” Following suit, we went to the nearby sports gallery and sat there together. There were many people around, and we had a bottle of water and some snacks we bought from a nearby shop. Just a few moments after sitting, out of nowhere, a police car arrived and started taking everyone into the car.
कल, मेरे जीवन में एक बहुत ही शर्मनाक घटना हुई। कल रात कॉलेज आते वक्त अचानक मेरी नजर एक ऐसे दोस्त पर पड़ी जिससे मैं काफी दिनों से नहीं मिला था। मैंने कहा, “आओ, यहाँ थोड़ी देर बैठते हैं।” सूट के बाद, हम पास की स्पोर्ट्स गैलरी में गए और वहाँ एक साथ बैठे। आस-पास बहुत से लोग थे, और हमारे पास पानी की एक बोतल और कुछ स्नैक्स थे जो हमने पास की एक दुकान से खरीदे थे। बैठने के कुछ ही देर बाद अचानक पुलिस की गाड़ी आ गई और सभी को कार में बिठाने लगी।
Seeing the bottle of water with us, they ran towards us and took us as well. We pleaded with them that we were just sitting here, but having a bottle of water doesn’t mean we were drinking alcohol. If necessary, they could conduct a medical test to confirm. But who would listen? They threatened to take everyone in the car forcibly and took us to the college outpost.
अपने साथ पानी की बोतल देखकर वे हमारी ओर दौड़े और हमें भी ले गए। हमने उनसे मिन्नतें कीं कि हम यहां बैठे थे, लेकिन पानी की बोतल होने का मतलब यह नहीं है कि हम शराब पी रहे हैं। यदि आवश्यक हो, तो वे पुष्टि करने के लिए एक चिकित्सा परीक्षण कर सकते हैं। लेकिन कौन सुनेगा? उन्होंने सबको जबरन कार में बिठाने की धमकी दी और हमें कॉलेज चौकी ले गए।
They took my bike along and there I heard many things that I was prepared to hear, without any fault on our part. Then they started noting down our names and addresses in their register. Still, I said, “I haven’t consumed any alcohol.” Was it our fault that we were sitting here? Then they made everyone get back into the car for an IGM test.

I was getting anxious during that time. Another police officer told me that if the doctor asks anything, I should just say, “Yes, I had a little.” But I responded, “No, I haven’t had anything.” Then the police officer said, “Then be ready for the case.” Hearing all this, I became silent out of fear. After that, they took me to the police station. When I went there, I had to undergo a check-up like a criminal. It was around 10 PM at night. Unfortunately, we didn’t see the doctor’s face until then.

Talking about the test was out of the question. The doctor wrote in the report, “We/I have consumed alcohol.” I really didn’t understand if it was a law in any country. They declared me guilty without any evidence. After that, they brought me back to the police station. They came and said to me, “You consume odorless alcohol and defame the name of South (Tripura) here.” Still, I said the same thing, “I haven’t consumed anything.” But what I said didn’t matter. The doctor’s report was a fake report in unfavorable circumstances. I felt very small in my own eyes.
परीक्षण के बारे में बात करने का तो सवाल ही नहीं था। डॉक्टर ने रिपोर्ट में लिखा, “हमने/मैंने शराब का सेवन किया है।” मुझे वास्तव में समझ नहीं आया कि क्या यह किसी देश में कानून है। उन्होंने बिना किसी सबूत के मुझे दोषी करार दिया। इसके बाद वे मुझे वापस थाने ले आए। उन्होंने आकर मुझसे कहा, “आप गंधहीन शराब का सेवन करते हैं और यहाँ दक्षिण (त्रिपुरा) का नाम बदनाम करते हैं।” फिर भी, मैंने वही कहा, “मैंने कुछ भी नहीं खाया है।” लेकिन मैंने जो कहा उससे कोई फर्क नहीं पड़ा। डॉक्टर की रिपोर्ट प्रतिकूल परिस्थितियों में फर्जी रिपोर्ट थी। मैं खुद को अपनी नजरों में बहुत छोटा महसूस कर रहा था।
Truly, my trust in the police and doctors has diminished since yesterday. If this is how the culprits roam freely in society while innocent people get trapped in the net of the law, then perhaps we shouldn’t tolerate the accusation of drinking alcohol as a punishment for drinking water.
सच में कल से पुलिस और डॉक्टरों पर से मेरा भरोसा कम हो गया है। अगर अपराधी इसी तरह समाज में खुलेआम घूमते हैं और मासूम लोग कानून के जाल में फंसते हैं तो शायद पानी पीने की सजा के तौर पर शराब पीने के आरोप को हमें बर्दाश्त नहीं करना चाहिए.
